Approx size of garden:

Little patch out front, but most of garden round the back, facing north-east. Sheep-field behind that and view (just!) to Pennines
|
Approx size of garden: 160 ft by 25ft

The garden has a large, flat, lawned area and a patio. A path winds up a gradual slope towards the top of the garden which has a boundary hedge of native trees and shrubs and a gate out onto the Fell.

Approx size of garden: 11.5m x 14m

Faces due south which means it gets a lot of sun during the summer months, but the opposite applies to the back of the garden next to our neighbours fence faces as this faces due north, so that this part of the garden gets very little sun. The soil in the garden is heavy clay which means it can get waterlogged during the winter months especially near the house, but this area can completely dry out during the summer months, all of this can make it a bit challenging of what plants will grow well in the garden.

Approx size of garden: 15ft by 4ft

A paved area with flower beds and wildlife feeding stations, visited by various birds and the occasional Red Squirrel!
|
Approx size of garden: 4.60metres top side, 4.90 metres right hand side,

The whole of the garden is on a slope. The area to be developed has a a retaining wall at the top side, a larch lap fence (neighbours choice!) painted green on the right hand side. At the lower side there is another retaining wall with a 6ft trellis positioned on top which is covered with Clematis Montana 'Marjorie' (which has escaped over a shed into the next door neighbours garden! Part of the ground was covered with tarpaulin to restrict weed growth until we decided on our plans.
We have a greenhouse at the left hand side of the area.
Above this area is a woodland patch, below the area to be developed is another small patch of garden with various shrubs, below there is a small rockery & then our patio.

Approx size of garden: Approximately 600 sq.metres.

Lawn with flowers, shrubs and a vegetable/soft fruit area. Cherry.rowan, quince and oak (grown from an acorn) trees, all between 35 -40 years old. This is separated by wall and gate from former farm yard in front of the house, now drive with grass, hazel bushes climbers, small flower/shrub beds; very old, hollow lime tree, and overgrown, rubbly area where we demolished part of the barn to let the sun in. All surrounded by old stone walls. Several nest boxes and an old bird table.
Lots of birds, average 30+ species a year. Visiting hedgehog, once hibernated in the barn. Moths, butterflies - usual garden species, plus orange tip, toads, occasional bat, various shrews, voles, wood and house mice, quite a lot of hoverflies, bees and small insects especially in the lime tree. Nettles, garlic mustard, ladies smock, ivy, hawthorn, ferns; lots of daisies, dandelions, white clover and self heal in the lawn. Plenty of weeds. We're plagued by himalayan balsam seeding itself everywhere.
Construction of pond, planted with mix of native and ornamenta plants (no fish) already producing an exciting number of new species. Increased range of 'accommodation' for birds, bats, hedgehog and insects installed. Plans to increase shrubs near the pond and introduce more wild and ornamental flowers and shrubs to provide cover and food to appeal to insects, butterflies and birds, and increase late summer/autumn flowering and winter berries. I don't want to increase the general workload of the garden which I find quite enough now.
