Project aims
The Wealth of Wildlife (WoW) project has many goals, ranging from actual physical improvements to habitats to advice for landowners and farmers. The project uses data from existing natterjack surveys and trains people to record and monitor natterjack populations. It also seeks to raise awareness of this enigmatic species in the county.
Reintroduction
WoW aims to reintroduce natterjacks into areas that used to support them and which have once again, become suitable habitats. The development of the new populations at these sites will then become part of the regular monitoring programme.
Habitat Re-creation
Natterjacks are declining mainly due to deterioration of their habitats. WoW will address this by re-creating certain important features, such as shallow scrapes in the ground that will become breeding ponds. Keeping these ponds clear of too much vegetation is also important. Areas around the pools will be prevented from becoming too overgrown by clearing scrub. Mowing may be done in conjunction with selective animal grazing to help keep the grass short, as this will assist the natterjacks with their hunting.
