WHAT IS WOW DOING?

Project aims

The main aims of the Wealth of Wildlife (WoW) project are to raise awareness of bats and provide opportunities for more people to be involved in a wide range of bat conservation work. It is hoped that, by raising awareness of bats, it will be possible to change the negative image some people still have of these nocturnal creatures.

Surveys

To conserve bats we first need to know where they are found and if they are doing well. The WoW project runs a programme of training events to increase the number of people in Cumbria with the skills to survey for bats. A series of targeted surveys will then help us to gain a better understanding of their distribution in the county.

Advice

Through events and publications, we are increasing awareness amongst members of the public as to the requirements of bats. Information is provided on 'bat friendly' buildings and how to build and put up bat boxes. We are holding a number of workshops in schools. A technical guidance document will assist professionals, such as architects and planners, in ensuring bats are properly considered when making decisions.
