Plans for the garden

Changed the raised bedding area into a pond in October 2006 and planted it up in the spring of 2007 with oxygenating plants (frogbit, hornwort), emergent plants (flowering rush, Cyprus sedge) and marginals (purple loosestrife, ragged Robin, marsh marigold)

Feeders

In January 2007, replaced the old feeders on the dead apple tree with a nyger seed feeder and a new six-station seed feeder. These have been used since day 1, with goldfinches regularly coming to the nyger feeder and we also have regular visits from long-tailed tits. Collared doves and coal tits also visit.

Plants

We are putting in plants for the birds in the bedding areas, including teasel, lesser knapweed, field scabious and btony.
For the bees and butterflies we are planting foxglove, cowslip, oxeye daisy, wild marjoram and sweet peas.
For bats (as they attract insects at night) we are putting in evening primrose, night-scented stock, nicotiana and climbing honeysuckle.

Bird & Bat Boxes

Put up 3 bird boxes in February 2007, one small-holed box on the shed next to the pond, an open-fronted box in the ivy on the side of the shed and a sparrow terrace on the side of the house.

Bug Hotel

We intend to put in a 'bug hotel' with a hedgehog box at the bottom in the 'weed' patch by the shed.
