TYPES OF PRODUCTS THAT ARE GOOD FOR WILDLIFE GARDENING

Peat bogs are diverse and fascinating habitats that have been, and continue to be, seriously damaged by extraction for garden composts. There are useful substitutes available from all good garden centres - if your local centre doesn't stock them, ask them to get some in.

Using natural products as a mulch to control weeds cuts down on backbreaking work and reduces the need for herbicides. A variety of products (including one derived from coconut husks!) can be obtained from garden centres.

In the past, water-worn limestone was a very popular stone for garden rockeries and as a decorative feature on garden walls. Unfortunately, this stone is quarried from threatened limestone pavements, which support a unique and fascinating mix of plants. Some experiments have been done to produce artificial limestone made from fibreglass! Always ask suppliers for the source of any stone you buy for your garden.
